The AC bootleg is installed and as pretty as it’s ever going to be:

Kinja'd!!!

Since the proper replacement part (ATC mode switch) hasn’t been available for 20 years, I rigged a switch to hot -wire the compressor circuit. Now it’s an ‘80s Japanese car. but I’ve got cold air.

The fuel gauge turned out to be a sunk float. Replaced the float (six bucks, direct replacement) and now the gauge works. And that’s the last of the major headaches.

There’s still some old car shit, like the left cornering lamp flickers with the turn signals and will prevent them from flashing if the headlights are on... but not if the bulb is removed. So that’s what I did for now.

Runs and drives sweet, starts every time. Laughs at potholes. I love this old barge.

Total investment: way too much, but IDGAF.

Idk if I said “ busted float” in the previous thread, but I definitely thought it in my head.

The ac setup is really sweet and a novel repair. I’ve never heard of doing something like that before, and it’s really a great way to remedy a complicated issue.

I like how the goofed up headlight bezel makes it look kind of like it has a raised eyebrow.

The bezel is fine, I just parked too close to the garage and it’s reflecting the open door.

That immediately sprang to mind when I saw how the sending-unit gasket had been repaired. They had to have had a reason for that. I said to myself, “ self, I bet when you get in there you find it full of fuel and covered in epoxy.” And that’s exactly what I found.

Turns out the float is the same one for a Mustang, various Mopars and pretty much everything to come out of Detroit since 1950. Somebody got their money’s worth from that tooling.

Those old boats are nice cruisers.  I drove an 84 Mercury Grand Marquis for about a year say 10 years ago. That thing was awesome, it had the 5.0 and actually got decent mileage (high teens) and wallowed like a drunk whale around turns but was an awesome highway cruiser.

There’s really no modern equivalent, short of maybe a Rolls. Everything today is some variant of German luxury to a greater or lesser extent. Even my mom’s ‘07 Lacrosse rides harder than Moby Vic. And yet, there was a time when all cars rode and handled like this.

Soft luxury laughs at potholes and slows down for corners.

You’re right about the highway ride. You waft along in silence, except for the wind noise. The Tripminder thinks I’m getting 24 mpg at 65 mph. That’s what the EPA said back in the day. Around town, mid-teens. It’s within 2 mpg of the Ranger.
